With a plethora of palm-lined hotels, a breeze floating off the Atlantic, and a guarantee of sun almost every day in July, August and September, Morocco can make a great summer destination. There’s no doubt that temperatures can climb very high in these summer months – it’s not unusual for it to hit 40°C or more in some parts of the country – but as long as you have air conditioning and a pool nearby for a refreshing dip then this makes for a great lazy getaway. To handle the heat, we recommend spending a few nights in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, where there are a handful of beautiful hotels with stunning gardens and turquoise swimming pools. Head up to the traditional villages at higher altitude here (in an air conditioned 4×4!) for a few degrees drop in the temperature and some authentic culture.
Follow this with five nights over on the beach, where you can fall asleep to the sound of the ocean. The pretty little town of Essaouira is ideal for pottering around – the narrow streets of the medina were made for hot temperatures so provide plenty of shade – and lie on a sun lounger under an umbrella at your central hotel. Head out for a wine tasting one day, and spend the rest of your stay in a state of hazy relaxation.
